Welcome to Bajan Bubblers Swimming School
Learn to swim in Barbados with Terry St Hill, an award-winning lifeguard
Terry St Hill has saved both Bajans and tourists who have got into difficulties swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.
Terry has witnessed a growing number of people putting themselves and others at risk by not following basic rules when in the sea.
This prompted him to set up Bajan Bubblers, a swimming school which not only concentrates how to learn to swim but includes "personal safety training" with all classes taking place in the sea - and is the first of its kind.
He stresses the importance of understanding and respecting the ocean because there is a big difference between swimming in a pool and swimming in open water. The ocean can be very unpredictable with a number of hidden challenges for non-swimmers and swimmers alike who do not follow the safety principles taught in his classes.
"A number of Bajans do not know how to swim owing to a fear of the sea. I am a fully qualified lifeguard and swimming instructor with over 12 years experience.
"My swimming programme will help people overcome their fears. At Bajan Bubblers we have an excellent success rate with our beginner adult and children classes becoming confident in the sea."
We welcome anyone wishing to visit our classes to contact us on (246) 834 6047 or by email info@bajanbubblers.com
"I have seen people enter the water when there has been a red flag clearly visible on the beach front. Others choose to go into the sea when the sun is at its highest (noon and 3pm) and loose their bearing because the reflective glare on the water instead of chilling out on the beach in the shade."
"Some people put possessions before their own personal safety trying to retrieve sunglasses, earrings, floating devices and beach toys! Then there are those who try and help others in trouble and end up loosing their own lives before going to seek help. "
"The worst offenders are those who drink alcohol impairing their ability, judgment and coordination. Others become intoxicated and behave irresponsibly by going into the water."
"Whatever the situation I teach people how to stay afloat in the water for as long as possible so that we can bring them to shore safely!"
What do we teach our students?
- How to keep themselves safe in the water
- To become confident swimmers
- To observe the rules of the sea
"That's why people come to Barbados on holiday, to enjoy our beaches and sea. Bajans are lucky because we have the luxury of both all year round, yet most don't know how to swim, which is tragic."
"I want to change that by offering swimming classes to both Bajans and tourists so they can access our beautiful waters safely."
